Park Info- Hurricane Preparation
When a hurricane threatens, our best course of
action is to already have a plan in place and start implementing
it early. If we wait until a hurricane watch is issued, that
only gives us 36 to 48 hours, and that is not enough time to
acquire needed materials and supplies as well as make all
necessary preparations for the storm.
Beginning of hurricane season:
ü
At
the beginning of hurricane season, go over plan with park
personnel.
ü
Check condition of and service chain saws and generators.
ü
Make sure there is enough plywood, tapcons and screws for
boarding up.
ü
Stock up on gasoline for saws and generators (can add stabilizer
if not used).
ü
Check and replenish emergency supplies such as flashlights,
batteries, first-aid kits radios, etc.
When hurricane watch is issued
and earlier if possible:
Ø
Board up and secure all park buildings.
Ø
Stow all patio furniture and trash cans.
Ø
Top up fuel in all vehicles and equipment.
Ø
Make sure all residents are aware of the approaching storm and
assist them in putting down storm awnings and securing loose
items around homes if needed.
Ø
Inform residents of public shelters and transportation that are
available in case an evacuation is ordered.
When hurricane warning is issued
(24 hours):
u
Back up computer files, and if evacuating take back-ups and
server to a safe place.
u
Double-check that all loose objects in the park have been
secured.
u
Take generators to recreation halls, and hook them up in case
some remaining residents need to go there for shelter.
u
Give as much assistance as possible to our elderly residents.
u
Evacuate park employees if ordered, and make sure they have a
letter identifying them as essential personnel so that they will
be allowed back in the area when the storm is over.
During the hurricane:
¥
FIND A SAFE PLACE AND HUNKER DOWN!
After the hurricane:
v
Make sure all residents who remained are safe.
v
Restore and maintain order, and give as much aid, comfort, and
assurance as possible.
v
Apprise regional office of situation.
v
Clear debris from both park entrances and streets so that
emergency vehicles can get through if needed.
v
Secure park buildings and dry-in if needed.
v
Turn off electricity, water and propane to homes that are
seriously damaged.
v
Check for any exposed power lines and secure the area around
them. Inform power company if it is their problem.
v
Acquire any equipment, contractors, and labor needed for
clean-up as soon as possible.
v
Secure and start repairing park perimeter fence as soon as
possible.
v
Start clean-up and repairs with priority going to the water
system and trees on or threatening buildings and homes.
v
Give special attention to park security to keep
out looters, scavengers, and other unwanted people.
